January 2008

Every now and again I make reflections about the months. A while back I wrote about September and how I think that month should be the 7th month or that I often start writing 7 instead of 9 when I write out dates in September.

At this time I can´t help but notice how incredible long January always seem to be. It just never ends. When I think of New Years day and what we did then I can´t believe that it is still the SAME month! Why is January so long? Last time I checked it was the regular 31 days like many other months in the year!

Not everyone knows that the Canary Islands are in the atlantic ocean just off the coast of the African country Marocko. The islands belong to Spain, which I probably mentioned earlier.

We went down to the ocean almost everyday.

There were a walkway along side the ocean line overlooking where the sun would be setting. We were on the south west side of the island so we got to see the sun set over the ocean.

I just love the sun!

Finally some pictures of the ocean from the north side of the island. This is from the capital Las Palmas and the long beach facing the north east. Though the island is rather small the temperatures varies and here in the north they have more clouds and rain. But better surfin. The water looks rather cold on these pictures but it wasn´t too bad!

Well, after soaking up the sun for a few days, Mir and I decided to hit the countryside in search of some authentic Grand Canarian culture and food. We rented a tiny car and set out. The first stop was in a little villiage in the mountains. The view was spectacular!

We found a little mom and pop restaurant and tried the rabbit soup…not bad! It had lots of beans and strange veggies in it. We realized that outside of the resorts, no one speaks English…so we did our best using gestures and a handfull of Spanish words that we picked up. The bathrooms at the restaurant were a bit primative…but here is the view from the toilet! (if you decided not to close the door that is)

After a few more stops, we ended up in a town called Teror. I really liked the name of it and really wanted to stop.

We found a coffee shop next to an old Spanish church. What luck!…and they had an espresso machine! We were super excited to try it out!

The coffee sucked! I have no idea what they did to it. I think maybe my worst cup ever.

We went out to the square and saw an old woman selling roasted nuts. She roasted them on coals right in the square. I was all over that! I got in line and pointed and gestured to the lady that I wanted some nuts.

It must be an aquired taste!

Sweden it was snowing and it was really cold. The wind was blowing the snow into the airplane since there were no extending gate but we had to walk outside to get to the plane.

We arrived to a warm tropical island and didn´t know where we would stay since we had bought a last minute deal with unspecified living. We ended up in a town called Puerto Rico on the sout side of Gran Canaria. We later found out it is the town that gets the most sun hours in all of Spain.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is pretty much a town of hotels with only tourtists. Most spoken language? Hard to say, between British English, German, and Norweigan. Swedish could also be heard pretty much everywhere. The center of town was just below our hotel in the valley and was full of tourist shops with a bunch of those fake watches, hand bags, and sun glasses.

Yes we are here! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the palm trees are slowly moving in the breeze. We are mostly by the pool side reading books. Tonight we were out on the beach and ate at a great restaurant. Just strolling along the ocean sea line.

More to come with pictures….
