It has once again been brought to my attention how weird these two months really are. I often make the mistake of mixing these two up. Why? Well, September should be the 7th month of the year. Why is it called September when it’s the 9th month? I thought sept meant 7. Am I wrong here?
So if I mix these two up now you know. Anyone else out there making the same mistake?

no! September comes after August and before October. Now you know. Good thing you told us your weakness so I could help you there.

You know the funny thing is that I only have a hard time with september. I really think of it as 7. I see 7 when I say september. But when I say october I do not see 10. I never confuse october and let say december or august. But I also do not have a problem with december even though I picture a 10 when I say it. Strange!

Truth…that is fact: September comes after August = mankind reaches truth

I picture 12 when I think december…..and also my birthday.

Did you know the date 16 is pretty magical? Should January be the first month then or should March be the first month?
Em said,

16 december should be the first day and month of the year….as you say: it´s pretty magical.

Em said…”16 december should be the first day and month of the year….as you say: it´s pretty magical.”
ok, that is what I am going to use then!
Think of all the benefits: no stores will be closed on New Years. You will have no trouble getting the day off to celebrate. You will have a day off in January for some unknown reason…..
Em said,
August 25, 2006 at 11:28 am
Since 16 december is the first day and month of the year, it should be some kind of logic that 15 december is new year. And then I do agree with Maxima about the unknown reason for a day off in January. But then again why not???
Mirjam said,
August 25, 2006 at 2:57 pm
Nah.. it’s not the 16th of December that is magical… it’s just the 16th of the month that is. Just a lot of links to the 16th in my life. So lets not make the 16th of December the New Year. I think Em, you mean that the 15th should be New Years Eve which is something entirely different from New Years Day.

Mirjam, Em didn’t say “New years DAY” he just said “New Year”. But speaking of magical numbers and such… 53 is my magical number. How sad, since I cannot link it to any day or month! Perhaps I shouldn’t enter this discussion?!
Mirjam said,

Right, I think he meant that the 15th should be New Years Eve! You know the day when we actually celebrate with fireworks and all…

To think or not to think…I am in a good giving mode today, so I give Johanna the 53rd of January the day off…..you know the day Maxima spoke of.

Thank you Em for giving me a day off that doesn’t exist! Just what I needed! I guess I’ll be working my butt off as usual… I wish instead I could get a raise by 53%… Would be nice!

I guess it´s my turn to confess…or to “come out” or….: Hi everybody! I am Em! I have a problem with “am” and “pm”. Why can´t the rest of the world do as we do in Sweden???

Mirjam said,

What does am and pm actually stand for. I know it is some latin thing but what is it?
Johanna said,
August 27, 2006 at 10:23 am
Without looking it up, I would think “a” stands for “ante” -which in latin means before. And “p” stands for “post” -which in latin means after. Like I said, I haven’t looked it up, but this is my theory, i.e. “a” -before noon and “p” -after noon. Makes sense?
Sam said,

Yup! And the “M” is Meridian…I think that is the correct way to spell it…
maxima said,

When I was a kid I memorized it as…
After Midnight
Midnight was that magical hour we never got to see.

So Sam, when you count it goes like this?: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelwe, twelweone? or like this: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/128811/do_not_laugh/

That´s a good help to remember, Maxima! Especially since not many people know latin. The M in PM and AM stands for meridiem, wich means noon/midday/12:00. Meri=middle, diem=day. Johanna is of course right about ante and post.
Carpe diem!

How interesting it is to see that this blog post inspired a discussion that involves everything from the year’s different months, childhood memories, and magical numbers to latin! Now, what I have a difficulty understanding is how come you don’t use the metric system in the States? It would be sooo much easier! It’s a jungle of ounces, gallons, pinches, inches, yards, and cups…

I like this discussion.
Did you know this was the whole intent for using a blog and comments? To start a interaction between people about whatever topic.
I think I’m the only American that knows 16.00 hrs is 4 pm knowing it in subseconds without any math. Maybe Sam can do that too?
sam said,
August 29, 2006 at 8:58 am
I am pretty decent at it…my timecard at my old job used “military time” so I had some practice…I especially remember 16.00 hrs because that was time to go home! The later it gets in the evening…the more I have to think about it.
Em said,

So you think…I mean try to think so much about when 16:00 hrs is, so you forget to go home? And the later it gets in the evening…the more you have to think about it (=”I don´t know what 16:00 hrs is”).
BTW (that is “by the way”), I guess you have heard and seen Ronaldinho play. He is not the only star (no, I am not talking about humble me now). Please do check this:

Sam, you have been in Sweden for some time now. can you tell us how you feel, strange things/odd things, that is better in USA, that is larger or smaller in either country, tips for things to bring here, that you miss as an american…..
sam said,
August 31, 2006 at 9:59 am
Well…pretty much everything is bigger in the USA. When you shop for stuff…it is usually “super-sized”, portions are bigger and even vegetables in the grocery store are bigger! (how do they do that?)
There are alot more independant restarants and stores here in Sweden…smaller retailers. In Minneapolis a majority of all stores and restaurants are chain retailers.
Food-You can find just about everything here…except Buffalo Wing sauce and salt and vinegar potato chips (thanks Jonas and Shiloh for hooking me up)
Swedish life seems pretty laid back compared to the USA (at least in my case) Mir and I were both really busy in Minneapolis and never saw too much of each other until the weekends.
The internet really keeps me connected to what is happening in the states though. I read the local newspapers online and so I really still feel like I am a part of that culture…Mirjam and I still talk baseball and root for our MN Twins!
